So... what have you been up to lately?

Well, on this side of Aus, I have been flat out! A few weeks ago, my two youngest girls had their interschool sports carnival. They both did really well, coming 2nd in their individual races and winning all their relays and team games. We were so rapt to have their school win not one, but both shields!! We were joined on the day by Jess and this gorgeous little man!

Here is Kaitlins latest foray in to photography. Other than cropping, I have not altered or photo shopped this photo. I think she did a fantastic job!

I have been so busy making stock for all the upcoming fairs that we are doing. I spent a week constructing a new range of necklaces, earrings etc.. The following week I spent doing art work for a whole heap of different bezels. Here they all are spread out ready to have the resin poured.

There are rings...

and double sided bezels, chokers...

bangles and round bezels...

cameos in all sizes and colours...

and my personal favourites, earrings. These were painful to do the artwork for as they are so small, but well worth the effort.

I have since done most of the resin, so the bezels are ready for packaging and pricing. That is a massive job in itself. Think I will get Mum around to help with that!

And this week was scheduled for playing with paint. So, I decided to sign up for the Towers and Turrets class by Sharon Tomlinson, WOW!!!!!! I am having the BEST time. It is so much fub and I find I have trouble tearing myself away from it!

I enjoyed it sooo much, I went on to make another one...
and another...
and another...
and another!!!! I told you I enjoyed it! These are still in the early stages of construction.
And these are a couple of backgrounds awaiting their towers.

And here is a view of my work table. Coffee hot, phone nearby and artwork to play with! What more could a girl ask for??? (Apart from more hours in the day!)

A close up of my 2nd attempt at a face in the towers. I was really pleased with this and very inspired to do more. I thoroughly enjoyed Sharons videos and her instructions were VERY easy to follow!

Does it ever end?

It feels like I will never get to the end of adding products on to the online store and I am not even half way through yet!! At present there are over 700 products listed and many of those are on special. In two weeks we will be doing the Craft Fair at Claremont Showgrounds and many of these products will be available there, so if you can't make it to the fair, I highly recommend going to the shop and getting what you want before the end of the month!!

A couple of weeks ago, Mum had her Vintage Fair Miss Johnsons at the Guildford Town Hall. There are a heap more photos over on their blog, so go on over and check it out. There will be another fair later in the year, looking forward to warmer nights!!

I have been making a few scarves on a loom that I bought from Spotlight, and I must admit a bit of an addiction. I have just finished a scarf for my sister and now all the kids want one. I did nearly finish one for Kaitlin today, but ran out of wool. I also have been dabbling with my cross stitch again, which is something I can do sitting in front of the tele at night.

Spring Clean... in Winter!

On Friday, Mum came around to help sort out my studio. As my studio is now home to all the shop stock, this was a massive job that requires much organisation if I am to find anything! Today I got to work clearing off my trestles so I can start creating!! I still have the end cupboard to sort out, but am really pleased with all I achieved today!

As you can see below, the 'office' is still a bit of a mess, but I do know where everything is if I need to get my hands on it.
My next big task is to sort all these boxes in front of my shelves. These will eventually all go under the trestles once I have cleaned out under there! Lots of these things are to be photographed to go on the website.

And, I finally have set up my first work station. This is all set up to start making some jewellery pieces. More on that in the next post.
And under this work station are all my bits and pieces for creating the jewelery pieces! Maybe not the most organised of systems, but one I hope will work for me!
Well, time to set up my next work station. I may even have enough done to start creating tomorrow!! One can but hope....

A New chapter begins

After 5 years we have closed to doors on our lovely shop...
It was with sadness and relief, sadness that this beautiful shop that we had grown and nurtured, was no longer, and relief that we now have more creative freedom and art time. Though finances were a small part of our decision, it was mostly due to our desire to travel and have more time to spend creating.

So, in a few short weeks, we went from this....

To this...
Our homes are now packed to the rafters!!! We have had a week off to catch our breath, but now are back in full swing again.
I am in the process of remodelling our website. The online shop is being completely overhauled with new products, sale items and our regular lines.
We will be bringing you some wonderful free online classes. At present we are not sure of how often these will come out, but to start with at least once a month. Having not done this before, it will take some to figure out all the logistics!
We also have some exciting news about an event that will take place next year. We are very excited and look forward to sgaring this news with you all soon...
Well, work to be done and it's almost time to do the school run.

Maddis Skating comp May 2010

This weekend Maddi had her 3rd skating competition, and I tell you what..., I am sooo proud of her. She loves her skating so much and does not let any set backs get her down! She is thriving under her new coach and improving in leaps and bounds.

Her she is with Natasha in their medals for figures, Maddi came 2nd and 'Tash took out the gold.
Here she is starting her dance routine, she came 5th.

And here she is in her freeskate costume. She came 4th in freeskate which was awesome considering she lost points for forgetting a jump and has only been learning this routine for a few weeks. We will practise lots more now and I am sure there will be a big improvement at next comps.

I am so proud of you Maddi, I think you are amazing!!!

How quickly time passes

... and here he is now! These were taken the Easter weekend and he is growing in leaps and bounds.

He now sleeps through the night,

has cut his 1st tooth,

says, "Da da" and "Ma ma",

sits up by himself,

and is trying to crawl!

Just look at that face. Of course he is adored by all his Aunties (and his Nana!!) and he has a wonderful Mummy, who is very patient and affectionate and very attentive. What more could this little man ask for??

A Belated Welcome to 2010!!!!!

It has been so long since I last posted on here. It has been so busy and then I had problems with all 3 home computers! They are all up and running again, thanks to my wonderful friend Eve, who is a whiz on all things computer related!
Well, where do I start? Our holiday to the Gold Coast was amazing! We had so much fun and are planning a longer holiday there for later this year! Was back only a month and then it was school holidays! Courtney has now graduated from Year 7 and is off to high school this year. Below are photos from her graduation.

Before we knew it, we were celebrating Jaydens first Christmas! Isn't he gorgeous!

Since Christmas it has been one thing after another without time to even contemplate being creative. Have played a little bit in some of my new journals, but not enough time to really get stuck in to it.
Just over a week to go and then the kids all go back to school and I head on back to work.
We are in the midst of planning a massive sale at the shop, including many of our pre-loved stamps, magazines etc... We are hoping to reduce our stock by half and then will start bringing in some really exciting stuff! I will try and get alot on Etsy but it depends on how busy it gets in the shop. If you are in Perth and want to get hold of some awesome things at amazing prices, let me know and I can email you when the sale starts. Am also downsizing my studio, and hope to set up an Etsy store with all my scrapbook stuff at heavily reduced prices. Well, best get back to work! Wishing you all a fantastic 2010!

The day after we arrived in Queensland, we headed off to Wet n Wild Water World. Heres a pic of the girls at the end of the day. We were all exhausted!!

Anthony caught sight of this amazing lizard as he darted on to this rock. He was close enough to touch.

Courtney was heading down this slide as I shot this pic and Maddi was not far behind her. That Madison has no fear!!

This is Buccaneer Bay where we spent alot of time. It was great for the little two to run around without us having to be right with them.

Heres Anthony relaxing by our hotel pool yesterday morning. The kids were in there as soon as it opened at 7:30 in the morning!

Well, today we are heading off to Warner Bros Movie World! I am so excited!!!!!

Of course a few pictures of my gorgeous grandson! Both Jayden and Jess are doing really well. Jessica is doing a fantastic job and is a natural Mum! Jayden is thriving and is starting to show his personality! Love him to bits.

My eldest daughter Samara has her drivers licence! I am thrilled for her but a little frightened!!

I have been busy painting and making jewellery and designing classes and getting ready for my holiday! We are taking our 3 youngest girls to Surfers for a week and I am really looking forward to getting away for a while. I don't know how much relaxation I will get but it will be loads of fun!

I have a Grandson!!!!!

My daughter Jessica gave birth to her son at 11:42am yesterday October 4th 2009.
Jayden Anthony weighed in at 7lb 10oz and 51cm long.
He is absolutely scrumptious!!!
Heres me having my very first cuddle! I look terrible as I had been up since 2:30am and was very priveleged to be with Jess throughout her labour.

Here is the new Mummy, Jess. Doesn't she looked pleased as punch???

Look at that gorgeous little face... He is about an hour old here, fed, weighed and very curious about the new world around him!

Mother and bub are both doing very well, albeit both a little bruised and battered! Off to have another cuddle this morning!

A happy Good Friday to every one of you!

I am spending the day sorting in my studio and feeling very gratified to be surrounded by all my lovely bits and pieces. Paint, paper, pencils and crayons and so much more!

Momentous Decisions Made

It has been something Jacky and I have thought so very long and hard about...
You have something that you have created, you know it could be made bigger and better, but you start at the beginning and try to work your way to your goal...
But sometimes, something steps in your way and says 'I can do better' and so, against every instinct, you hand over your baby.
There is such regret and sadness, a feeling of sickness in the pit of your stomach and tears in your eyes. You know that, given the chance this could have been something wonderful...
The memories that have been made, the people you have met, the friendships forged.. is that all gone now? Oh, you know all the mistakes you have made, the things that could have been done differently, better.
But, you never forget, YOU DID IT!

Someone may come along who can do it better, but we were always FIRST!

And so,

You face reality....

You pick yourself up....

Dust yourself off....

Surround yourself with those who love you most...

And forge on ahead to...

Dwellingup Retreat 2009

Our Dwellingup retreat is now available for viewing online and bookings can be made. We are already half full, so if it is something you would like to do, please do not delay. Here are a couple of sample pics.

This week heralds some new beginnings (caution - below is some language that may not be suitable for tender minds!)

Jacky and I have decided we will arm ourselves with a 'Fuck 'em all' attitude.

We are sick and tired with all the mind games, bitchiness and insenstivity that often abounds in many craft areas. The little 'clicky' groups that believe themselves above we mere mortals. From here on in we will look after ourselves first and foremost to ensure that we are able to offer the best of ourselves to our customers, friends and families. No longer will we allow the shallow attitudes of others to get us down.

This week is a new beginning for me as it is the end of a huge amount of dental work and as of tomorrow I will smile proudly and brightly! Prepare to be dazzled, hee hee!

We are also venturing out to new and unknown areas of art, experimenting, playing and discovering awesome new techniques to share with you all. I am so excited and itching to get stuck in to it all.

2009 is to be our year of growth, and a whole new attitude. I do apologise to those who may think this is cold and hard, but we have found we need to arm ourselves in this way or be destroyed by others.

Lots to think about

It has been well over two months since my last post, but I have been busy over that time. We are busily planning a lovely restful retreat at Dwellingup for later this year. Keep an eye on this space for more details soon, plus the new classes being added to our 2009 retreat in Sydney!

With all the tragedy in Melbourne being on the news, my heart went out to all those in flood ravaged Queensland. Please remember them if you are thinking of making donations. Check here to see how you can donate

These people have also lost homes, pets, livestock, business and unfortunately loved ones. They also face a long haul of rebuilding ahead of them.

I guess the whole world is now aware of the Victorian bushfires and our hearts go out to all affected both in Victoria and Queensland.
My daughter Courtney is on the student council at our local primary school, and on Friday they raised over $800 for the bushfire relief. With just one days notice and being a small school, I thought this was a massive effort.

I will do a more 'art' related post later this week.

Samara turns 18!

18 years ago today, I held my 5lb 14oz baby girl in my arms! Look at her now, all grown up. I know it is cliche, but time has really flown!!!
On Saturday night, Samara held a Roaring Twenties party to celebrate her 18th. It was a great night and everyone got in to the spirit and dressed up.

Almost Finished

A few months back I was lucky enough to do a class with the very talented Judy Wilkenfeld. I am ashamed to admit, it has taken me this long to finally get stuck in to it, and apart from a few finishing touches, I am finished.

The original book I had in mind for the outside turned out to be too small and I got very frustrated trying to find something suitable here at home. I was just about to go through the kids bookcases (nothing is sacred!!!), when I discovered two MDF placemats. They turned out to be the perfect size! I covered the placemats with some of the gorgeous Lynn Perrella papers and a few bits and pieces. The book is titled 'SHE' as that is the title of the smaller book inside this one and was the inspiration for my pages.

Here is the previously mentioned inside book. I really love the look of the stitches where the spine has been re-attached to the covers. I also loved the decoration and colour of this book, so didn't do much to it apart from adding a few charms. I had a great time learning how to age all the charms, messy but so much fun!
Here is the inner book with the window removed. The mica obscures the inside tin in the photo, but you get the idea. I actually had the cover and tin finished in Judys class.

Here is the inner book open to show the tin and inside cover. I love how the spine looks with the ageing techniques, thanks Judy!!
This book is attached to accordian fold pages which fold out. A bit hard to explain, I should have taken photos of it all folded out.

This is the first of the accordian fold pages. The image is framed by aged copper mesh, then there is mica, waxed paper, charms fabric etc... I found the layering a little difficult to get balanced looking, but really love the effect.

Page 2 of the accordian, this is inspired by a page from Judys book. Loved the look so I copied it for my own book. Judys has alot more detail and layering though. Under the image is a little fabric pocket which has a hinged frame inside. I still need to add images to the frame and will attach it to the pocket with some chain.

I am really happy with this (page 3 of the accordian) . This image is one of my favourites, the girl looks so wistful. The fabric was aged using techniques in the class, I love how the cheesecloth came out.

This is the back page of the accordian fold which is attached to the inner back page of the large book. (Does that make sense????)

This is the first page on the back of the accordian fold. I painted the wallpaper using Judys technique, layering with lots of paint, inks etc... I love how it looks like walnut wood. I will have to make some more of this, because I can see it getting used alot!

The corner piece was made by Judy and I was very lucky to be given it after the class.

Another back page. I think I will add a few more things to this page. Just feels a little empty to me?

This is a frame I made myself using the technique Judy showed us on the other frame.

When I designed this page I add a gorgeous crown charm that I had aged and it was going to go in the empty top part inside the frame. When I started putting it all together, the crown disappeared!!! I am determined to find that crown and this page will remain unfinished until I do.

Sammi went to a Halloween Party on Friday night, dressed as the girl from Prom night.

Ever the innovative girl, she decided to use my watercolour crayons to create this awesome blood effects. How scary does this girl look???

SWH workshop Day 1

Well, it took me a little longer to get back to this, flat out at the shop at the moment getting ready for Christmas!!

Here are a few pics from the Saturday of the workshop. This day focused primarily on journalling and getting in touch within and with what you needed to say.
Lots of lying on our backs, gazing up in to the trees, relaxing and re-energising.
I got a load of journalling done from the prompts that Sabrina gave us, it's great to look back on it now and re-read what i wrote. I can't wait to get it all down in the journal I created.

Here is Sabrina and Erin, Sabrina is such a gentle soul, very down to earth and unpretentious. I so enjoyed her company and felt relaxed right from the start.

After lunch we all found our own little 'workspaces' and started prepping the pages for our journals. We had a lot of fun sorting through everyone elses left over pages to add to our own journals.

Mandys workspace. It was a little difficult with the wind, but fortunately it was a lovely warm day. Also, the wind allowed all our pages to dry very quickly!

It was such a lovely bunch of girls in the workshop and so interesting to hear others take on the journal prompts. So very obviously affected by our various life experiences and the aspects of our present and past lives.

Day one was awesome and obviously including so much more than what I have written!
I went home that night emotionally and physically drained but also very inspired and looking forward to day 2!!!

Sabrina Ward Harrison Workshop

A Few Paintings

Thought I would post a few of the paintings that I have done recently.

This one below is on 8x10" canvas, I actually painted this quite a while ago, just needed to add that finishing touches. I was so happy with this one.
Once again, this is on 8x10" canvas, you can't tell from the photo, but the darker area around the edge is a pearl tint, it looks so pretty when it catches the light.

8x10: canvas, I love the numeric background in this one and was really pleased with the image transfer on her dress. I wish I had discovered my sepia pencil before I outlined her face, but still happy with how she has turned out.

This one is still a work in progress. It is 8 1/4 x 11" on 300gsm watercolour paper. It will be stitched on to a book board backing.

The photo of this one didn't turn out the best, the colours are all washed out and her eyes are a bit googly. She looks much better in real life. I so love her wings, they look almost real.

Have quite a few more pieces on the go and am loving every minute of it! Nothing makes me happier than a day spent playing with paint!

Wow! Where did September go????????????

I can't believe it has been a month since I last posted on my blog! So much has been going on, where do I start?

My wonderful husband celebrated his 40th birthday, with a lovely party at home and the remainder of the night (and in to the wee hours of the morning!!!) at the Burswood Casino. It was alot of fun but I was disappointed in to the state our casino has fallen in to. Certainly not the opulence of the early days.

My children have all been busy with sporting activities. Courtneys team took out the netball premiership for the second year running, what a nail biting game that one was!! The girls are all playing so well together.

I was lucky enough to spend the two days of their sporting carnival with them, Courtney took out the Gold medal for her year and Madison took out the silver in her year! One very proud Mum.

At present the kids are all on school holidays, apart from Jess who has left school and is now in full time employment. A much better situation for her and she is a much happier person. Things are so much calmer at home now, school just does not agree with some kids and I think it is time the Government realised that! Kids who are not happy at school are disruptive for teachers and other students, alternatives need to be found.

I have been painting up a storm and loving every moment of it!!! I have also been getting stuck in to making some jewellery using the bezels we got in to the shop. Sooooo much fun!

We are working feverishly getting ready for a couple of Perth events, Subiaco Craft Fair and Perth Upmarket. Check them out if you are in Perth, or visiting.

Still having head aches with our blasted website, but it is out of my hands. We are changing providers to have more reliability but the changeover has proven rather problematic. At the moment the shop can still be accessed, and our new providers are working on getting everything else up.

While on the subject of the shop, we have a pretty awesome sale on at the moment! Go on over and check it out! Sale ends Saturday, so be quick!!!

Retreat bookings are coming along well, with several classes close to full. Unfortunately with the website down, bookings have slowed, but we know we are going to get a flood once it opens up again.

Plans for 2010 are coming along nicely, we have been in discussion with quite a few US Artists and the line up is going to amaze you. More tutors than ever before, with some fantastically talented artists.

Finally, big congratulations to two lovely ladies, Jhodi and Lisa, who have both recently had little bundles of joy! Jhodi had a beautiful baby girl and Lisa had a bouncing baby boy. And I know that Karen is due any day now (or already had her baby!!!), so Karen, congratulations on your new baby boy! Don't you just love new babies????

Just a really quick post because it is late and I want to try and get some more work done on my book! To day I had the extreme pleasure of doing a workshop with Judy Wilkenfeld, based on this beautiful book. This photo really does not do any justice to this masterpiece, there is so much detail and texture and depth, that can only be seen in real life.
Judy is a fantastic teacher, so sharing of her knowledge and passing on so many hints and tips that you walk away so inspired and wanting to try them all!

Our extremely gracious hosts, Sharon and Steven Manning opened up their beautiful home for the workshop and I tell you, their place is absolutely beautiful, just check out this view!!

And here is where we toiled away the day, having so much fun. The other workshop participants are all lovely ladies, and we are all having so much fun!!!

Thankyou Judy for a fantastic workshop that I am thoroughly enjoying, can't wait until tomorrow for more.
Thankyou to Sharon, your gentle welcoming manner puts everyone at ease and I have been so glad of the opportunity to get to know you a little better.

Always running out of time

Aaaargh! I have so much to show you, the work I have been doing of late but I have run out of time and am totally unprepared!! Very frustrating! I am trying to get all my materials compiled for Judys class on the weekend too, very disorganized!!

I had a bit of a winge to the girls at the class today. They said they had read about the retreat on the blog and I asked why they hadn't left a comment.
I know people are visiting, but you are not leaving comments.
I would love to chat to all of you from around Australia and the world and to visit all of your blogs, but I don't know who you are!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, on to matters at hand. Work on the retreat is coming along nicely and we are really excited as to next years line up of teachers and classes. You are all going to love it so much.
We are also planning evening activities, as the Academy is quite far away from anything, we wanted to plan some fun arty things for you all. Any suggestions?
The website should be all completed by next week with registrations opening very soon after. You will be very pleased with the pricing structure!
I wish to thank each and every one of you who has offered support and encouragement to us over the past few years, you are all the most amazing people!

This is a beautiful secluded venue that has ample size classrooms,nice acommodation, all meals catered for to suit all dietrequirements and even a heated swimming pool if that is up youralley!! But, best of all the price is fantastic.

We will also be offering several transport options, including acharter bus to make getting to the venue as convenient as possible.The evenings will include lots of fun and artistic activities, freeof charge!! Its going to be so much fun.

Here are a few shots that I took at the Academy yesterday.
Below is one of the workrooms. These are great, they have kitchen facilities and bathrooms as well as plenty of natural light.

This shot was taken through the window as the room was being used by another group. This is one half of the roo. See al the lovely big windows?
This is the firing range which could be used for gathering in the evening, or as a nice big workshop.
The Motel rooms from the back. Each room opens up to the outside with a little balcony/private area.
A shot of the inside of one of the rooms. The rooms have tea/coffee making facilities, bar fridge, TV?Foxtel, airconditioning and ensuite bathrooms. Just the basics, but very comfortable.

We also have access to this lovely big heated swimming pool for those who may need to burn off some excess energy or rejuvenate.

This is a book that Mary Jo co-wrote with Sunny Koch, it is a gorgeous book, jam packed with inspiration!
And finally, a shot of Darling Harbor where we were staying whilst in Sydney, loved it. A real buzzing place!

Busy, busy, busy...

Although this poor old blog has been rather neglected of late, I have been very busy. There is so much going on behind the scenes, all very exciting stuff. We can't wait to reveal all to you, but will have to wait a little while longer to let the cat out of the bag.

I am jetting off to Sydney with my sweet husband, who is accompanying me on this business trip, a search for the 2009 retreat venue. I am very excited about this, we want to find the most amazing, relaxing and functional venue for '09!! Also, my husband and I have never had a honeymoon, so this is a very delayed vacation for us!

I have also been having so much fun making artwork for bezels and filling them, then crafting them in to necklaces. The 'Nina Knots' are beginning to feel more natural now, after much practise and I find myself totally engrossed. I completed four necklaces today and am so thrilled ith the results!

Well, off to my wire and beads again!

To encourage all of you to explore your creativity, promote yourselves as artists and have some fun, as well as winning a great prize, we have started up Monthly Mixed Media Challenges on our website.

This months challenge is

JULY THEME

Create a journal page using Misty Mawn techniques learnt at Art Journey Retreat.
These techniques can also be found in Cloth Paper Scissors issue 7 and issue 13.

DETAILS

PAGE SIZE - 8.5 x 11" in landscape format with 1" on left hand side being for binding.

PRE REQUISITES
Page front is to be painted and decorated using images, freehand or clip art images in theme.
Back of page painted and suitable for journalling.
Using 300gsm 100% cotton watercolour paper (Smooth or rough)
Predominantly Using Golden Products.
Each page must be initialed by the artist with the month and year in the lower right hand corner of front page.
Each page must be accompanied by a signed disclaimer.
You may enter as many times as you like

The completed pages will be compiled in to journals that will then be offered for sale, with challenge participants having first option.

We have had a few fantastic deliveries in the shop this week, with more on the way.

We got these books in before the retreat and they all sold out so quickly, we got more in today...

... along with loads of bezels! Can't wait to start playing with these!

This is another book we have sold out of, got in another 5 today.

If you have done Ninas jewelery class and tried to find these diamond twist drill bits in Australia, you will know how hard they are to find. Well we got some in yesterday and they were all sold out by this morning! We are ordering more in, so if you want some, send us an email so we can order enough.

These polishing papers are fantastic for adding a lovely shine to your finished jewelery or metals on mixed media projects. These are still available.

Not much further ahead...

Finished one canvas and almost finished another, but have not had alot of time for painting the past few days. Feeling like I want to be doing something else, maybe it is because these canvases are so small, yet require so much concentration to paint. I got some new bezels yesterday so might have a play with them.
I did do some scrapbooking last night, they are posted here if you are interested.

These have not photographed too well, it is rather dim here at the moment so I had to use the flash.

ART JOURNEY RETREAT 2009
Jacky and I are doing ALOT of behind the scenes work for Art Journey Retreat 2009. This includes talking with some incredibly talented artists, revamping the retreat website so it is more attractive and easy to navigate, planning loads of activities, demos, treats and surprises. I tell you, I am so excited about next years retreat that I wish I was a delegate myself! We have learnt so much over the past two years and that experience is really going to show next year. I wish I could tell you more but there are things that we really need to keep hush until it is all up on the website. Stay tuned, you will NOT be disappointed!

I love Mondays

I just love Mondays, I don't know why. Maybe because it is usually my only 'free' day. Usually the kids are all at school, hubby at work and I have the house to myself. Even today, with the kids at home, I am enjoying this Monday.

Have had a little creative time over the past few days and have been working on some mini canvases. The images were inspired by artist James Christenen. I love all the detail to his work and could not imagine even trying to get all that detail in my own work! But, still I thoroughly enjoyed doing these pieces, the small scale was a bit of a challenge!
This piece below is mostly coloured with the Caran D'Ache crayons.
I love the richness of the colour on this one below. I primarily used the Golden fluids on this one.
This last piece is again using the crayons. Still in a state of near completion. I think I prefer using the fluids and that is what I will use on my last two pieces.

It has taken my way too long to get these necklaces photographed and put on my blog! Every time I go to photograph them, the girls are wearing them!
This piece below was made during the 'stone soup' class with Nina at the Melbourne retreat. I made it for my eldest daughter Samara.
It took my ages wiring on all those little beads using the wonderful 'Nina Knots', but well worth all the work. The large stone pendant is a piece of greenstone, very kindly given to me by the lovely Corinne Davis. All the way from the beaches in New Zealand!
I really enjoyed this class and learnt so many techniques. I just loved making the ribbon wrap beads and learning all the knots and clasps and so on. So much to digest in one class, but sooooooo much fun!
Not a very good shot, but a bit of a close up.
And I was so inspired by Ninas class that I started working on this necklace that same night! This is for my daughter Jessica. I bought the Celtic charm pendant on our last day in Melbourne and finished the necklace the next night when I got home to Perth.
The beads actually have a pink and cream tone that seems to have washed out on the photos, but you get the idea!
I really enjoy making the jewellery and though they will never be as good as Ninas, I have fun making them
I actually have a couple more necklaces on the go, just waiting for the right time to complete them.

And finally, my poor baby girl. She was so sick over the weekend, with severe stomach cramps, nausea and a high fever. She finally crashed on the lounge chair about lunch time yesterday and slept the rest of the day away. When she awoke at 8pm, she was feeling so much better and rearing to go! Kids seem to bounce back so quickly! Love you sweetness. xoxo

Recent...hmmm... developments???

I have thought long and hard about posting any of this on my blog, still not sure if I will hit the 'publish' button when I am done typing???
I have just been discussing certain matters with Mum, my husband and my kids and feel that I need to defend myself. My sweet 11 year old daughter was quite indignant and told me I should always stand up to bullies!
I despise rumours!!! Hate, hate, hate them with a passion. They are started with the intention to cause harm and hurt behind the anonymity of computers.
Do these people think about the ripple effect that these rumours cause? Do they understand that they are not only hurting the people that the rumours are about, but their spouses and children, their business that they have worked long and hard to establish?

Over the past week we have had so many phone calls from the most amazing people offering much appreciated support, thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
Today my baby girl is very ill and that has made me realise that I need to stop worrying about all this other rubbish and concentrate on those closest to me, my beautiful daughters, gorgeous husband amazing parents and loyal friends.

So, I have decided. I will publish this post and then no more. It is over and we are moving onward and upward!

I have just paid my deposit to do this workshop with...... SABRINA WARD HARRISON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so excited and what anamazing venue for a workshop, it is going to be so incredible. Just over three months to wait and I will spend that time constructively making an art journal!

I think they are starting another workshop the following weekend as this one is full. Check them out here to find out more if you are interested.

And guess what? I think I will also be doing the Bali retreat with Anahata Katkin in March next year!!! Hoping to go with Di and Mandy... Fingers, toes and everything else crossed!!

A bit of art

As mentioned in my previous post, I have been doing a fair bit of painting. Thought I would share a few pieces, most of which are 'works in progress'.
I found it is easiest to do a whole heap of pieces at each stage, ie. loads of backgrounds, then images, then lastly, the finishing touches.

This piece I am really happy with, a little bit abstract. Still needs the finishing touches.

The following two pieces were inspired by Mistys work, practise, practise, practise.

I am sooooo happy with the next two. Still need to paint the beret on this one and add finishing touches to both.
Hubby thinks this one looks pissed off. Hmmm.....

The following two have had the images sketched in and awaiting painting. Hope to work on them tomorrow. Spending today scrappin photos of kids. Need to get back to what is most important to me, my kids and family.

Hope you are all enjoying school holidays. My kids have been amazing, such good kids.

Monday musings

I got quite a shock when I saw the date of my last post and realised it has been three weeks since I last posted! Time is flying past at lightening speed and I can't keep up with it.
Well, its June 30, end of the financial year, halfway through 2008 and my baby girls birthday. Happy 7th birthday Madison, love you xoxoxox.
The last three weeks have been crazy busy. The shop has been buzzing, lots of art has been created and we have started ordering in some wonderful new stock for an upcoming craft fair at the showgrounds. For all of you who have purchased the Coffee Break stencils, we have loads new designs coming in, just love those stencils, they are so much fun to work with.
Had a bit of a blast from the past yesterday, when I was contacted by an old friend from my high school days. A 20 year reunion is being planned (20 years????). It would be great to catch up with all the people I went to highschool with, it brings back soooo many memories thinking back on those days.
Well, off to do some painting and try to keep warm, have a great week.

... when it is wet and windy outside? When everything is dripping and soggy?

Puddles cover the ground, an invitation to small children and children at heart, to splash and jump?

When favoured pets curl up on chairs they just know they are not allowed on and then look at you with big doe eyes?You pull out your paint and journals and pictures and tape and you spend the day, warm and dry indulging in a favourite pastime! Thats what you do, and thats just what I have spent this wonderful winters day doing. Pure bliss!

This is a canvas I am working on. The images are from my sketch book shown in a previous post. I hope to complete this later tonight. Fortunately, all the girls netball practises have been cancelled due to the weather and I have a (relatively) free evening ahead of me. Again, pure bliss!!!!!
When we were in Melbourne, Mum bought me this book. It is SO much FUN!!! You are allowed, no, encouraged to get messy, destructive and free. Love it!
As you can glimpse, I have been having alot of fun with this.

Have spent most of today doing boring old housework, but dinner is now slowly cooking (love my slow cooker!!!), washing is flapping away on the clothesline (with me keeping an eye on those dark clouds coming over), house is (WAS) tidy and I have straightened up my studio... again. Have spent the afternoon doing a bit of scrapbooking as I didn't have time to start my painting. Will post the days results on my other blog tonight.
On another night I checked out this blog, Grey Sky Day after reading a comment on my blog. I also read Bernie Berlins blog earlier today and was inspired to do something to help the animals in my won little way. While reading Marble Blues blog I saw her link to this site. Fate?? I will be adding this link to my site so I can click on it everyday to try and help the animals.

Just a little obsessed!

I have just been having so much fun, playing with paint and ink and transferred images. All weekend I was up to mu elbows in it (literally) and just did not want to stop.
I decided I would practise the techniques I learnt in Mistys class, using my journal as my canvas. Here are the results...
Though it doesn't really show in the photo, these pages have a silver sheen to them from adding Golden Irrid. Silver fluids in to the mix. Really like the look it gives to the page.

On this page I used a scrapbook page as a stencil to apply the Golden Soft Gel Medium as a resist. You can see it as a soft shadow on the left hand page. I also experimented with a couple of different Adirondack re-inkers. I have used Rust, Lettuce and Stream.

Well, I cannot take credit for this page! This is a Misty Mawn original that Misty very kindly created in my journal at the art retreat. It is amazing how quickly this girl can create a masterpiece!

Another background page. These will be my pages for writing on and adding all my relevant 'bits'. I have sealed all the pages using a Workable fixative, so If I need to add more I can.

Yet another background page, this time experimenting with different Golden Heavy Body Acrylics. On these pages I have used the Dioxazine Purple. Really like the effect of the Nickel Azo Gold Acrylic and the Lettuce Adirondack Re Inker.

And this is a page that I made with the painted figure. I have also used some of the Catherine Moore papers. I was really pleased with this page, certainly not as good as Mistys but I love it.

These are just a couple of transfers from some of my scrapbook paper stash.

Another completed page... Love the colours on this. Maybe a bit busy, but still I am happy with it.

Once again I have used alot of the Catherine Moore papers on this page. Those papers are so versatile and beautiful and work so well with this style of work.

This was a page I made at the Retreat in Melbourne. I have just cut it down to fit my journal. I have also used the cut off pieces on other pages.

Another background page. This time I used a chipboard cut out to stamp the Soft Gel on to the page to act as a resist.

Another page I made in Melbourne. I can see so many errors in my face painting, but it is a great souvenir of Melbourne, so I won't change it.

More experimentation with different colours. Used the Golden Fluid Cobalt Teal.

I have also been practising the 'face a day', as encouraged by Misty. These are magazine images. This one is actually of a girl and her reflection in the mirror, but I decided to make them look very different.

Another magazine image. I reckon the girl on the left looks a little like Sandra Oh from Greys Anatomy??!

This one I drew myself, inspired by the work of Kelly Rae, obviously on all of these I have only completed the skin parts and will work on clothing etc.. at a later date.

This is another I drew myself, inspired by Anahata Katkin. If you haven't seen this girls work, you really need to go and see it! Her art journals are so awesome and inspiring, I would just LOOOVVVVE to have her come to Australia and teach!

Last night I did the backgrounds on two canvases, but I have left them at the shop to complete tomorrow.
Anthony has once again gone away to work and won't be back for a couple of weeks. That means that I have once again taken on the role of 'single parent' and I tell you something. I take my hat off to every single parent out there. It is HARD WORK!!!!!!!!!! Not only do you have twice the work, but you have to take on all the emotional stuff all by yourself! At least I know my hubby is coming home and at the moment is only a phone call away!
Well, the kids are starting to get irritable so it must be feeding time at the zoo?........

Retreat Q and A

I did mean to do this earlier this week, but am glad I didn't until today, as we have received many more emails, had countless discussions and (hopefully) have worked out a way to iron out a few wrinkles.
As I mentioned in a previous post, we knew, that as this was only our second retreat, we still had alot to learn. And the fact that we were dealing with a venue across the other side of the country, there would be even more to learn. So, with that in mind, I believe that the retreat went extremely well, the hiccups were relatively minor and easily remedied for 2009 (more on that later).

Overall, the response from those who have returned their comment sheets, emailed, phoned and visited the shop has been overwhelmingly positive.
TUTORS
There was not a single negative comment about the tutors. All thoroughly enjoyed the variety of classes, the mixture of art styles and the tutors themselves. As I was fortunate enough to attend a class from each tutors, I would agree with that. I personally learnt so much from all my classes, and believe that I can apply all I have learnt in to my own art.
VENUE
This was a mixed reaction and now I can see how much we would have benefitted from visiting the venue well prior to the retreat. The class rooms could have been alot larger, especially paint classes, better sign posted with a map given to each student, easier access to water etc... and having the shop in a separate location.
For 2009, we are planning on having the retreat in Sydney. There are two locations that have been recommended, and we plan on travelling to Sydney soon to check them out. We are looking for a venue that provides workshops, accomodation and meals all in one location. Having accomodation and workshops in the one venue worked very well in Perth last year.
MEALS
Perhaps the biggest bone of contention was meals/refreshments. At the retreat in Perth 2007, morning and afternoon teas were provided and the cost of this was enormous (jaw droppingly expensive!!!!!!!!!!), plus many mentioned that they did not want to stop working for a refreshment break. It was with that in mind that we planned the Melbourne retreat in the way that we did. Needless to say, that did not work either! So in 2009, we thought a venue that provided all meals, plus refreshments would be ideal. Though the initial cost will be higher to cover meals and accomodation, once you factor in all the expenses, it will work out much more economical in the end. We are committed to keeping this as affordable as possible to ensure that the retreat is accessible to a wide range of people.
COST
Many have said that they are quite happy to pay the higher cost and have a high standard of international tutors. Some have mentioned that the prices are too high in comparison to other art classes offered. Unfortunately, due to the cost of bringing our international tutors over to Australia, we are unable to reduce this cost in any way. Also, due to the increase in fual prices and airfares going up, this cost will most likely have to increase in 2009. Sorry!!! In order to bring high quality artist from America, this is unavoidable.
We did offer a range of lower cost classes with Australian tutors, with a mixed response, though I know that those who did attend Ro and Jackys classes had an amazing time!
AUSTRALIAN TUTORS
Once again, people have mentioned that they are more than happy with the international tutors. We thought we would offer classes with Australian tutors again on the Thursday in 2009. This information will be released at the same time as the international tutors, so that people have plenty of time to organise their schedule.

We also realised that this mammoth task was just way too much for the two of us and in 2009, we will be having several more assistants to ensure the smooth operation from start to finish. We have tried very hard to factor in every person needs, but realise that we do need to be more firm on several issues. In 2009, there will be a few guidelines that will need to be adhered to, to ensure that it is a smooth running, fun and creative event for everyone.
Other changes for 2009, will include
- an email address dedicated entirely to the retreat. This will ensure emails do not go unanswered or end up in the 'junk', by the email sorting system. All emails will be answered promptly.
- a few social events, show and tells, group photos etc...
- retreat assistants in every class.
- a separate shop area.
- a tutor trading night (announced prior to the retreat commencing)
- clearer instructions with maps etc....

Art Journey Retreat - Day 4

Sunday we woke to the rain steadily pouring down, it was very hard to get out of my snug warm bed, but the days class motivated me to get moving!
Today I was doing a class with Nina Bagley. In all the times that we have had Nina here, I still hadn't done a class with her. I was excited about learning Nina knots and was planning on making a necklace for my eldest daughter, Samara.

When we arrived at Swinburne, we were most upset to find it all locked up tight! After wandering around looking for an entry point for over half an hour, a lovely security guard came and opened up for us.

Everyone arrived, rearing to go! It was chaotic as we had decided to move Nina in to the bigger class room, as there was a full to capacity class.

Nina started by carefully taking us through the Nina knot process, step by step. Some took to it naturally, others not so. I picked up the actual technique okay, but knew I would need to do alot of practise to get them as neat as Nina does.

And Nina showing the way. The technique of Nina knots is so effective, I love the way it gives jewellery a raw look, not so precise as jewellery bought from stores. And I also love the natural element, natural stones and gems, pebbles, sea glass etc...
This is Corinnes little box of treasures. I was fortunate enough to receive 2 beautiful pieces of Jade from Corinne (thankyou soooo much!!), one of which I used in my necklace for Samara.

This is the class sample. It was great that no-one tried to reproduce this piece exactly and there were some wonderful, unique pieces created on this day.
I was so happy to complete my necklace, even though I was struck by melancholy, exhaustion and sadness about a quarter of the way through the class. Despite this, it was a great class and I felt I learnt so much from it. The day I returned to Perth I completed a necklace for my daughter Jessica, using a Celtic charm I had picked up in Melbourne on a shopping trip we went on the next day.

I am still happily playing with wire, beads and chain. A recent trip to a bead shop set me back over $200, but I am set to go now. Nothing holding me back.

I must take some photos of Samara and Jessicas necklaces to show you all.

Then, to end off the day we had to pack up and label all our stock and tidy up the class rooms. hat a massive job, but made fun by all our helpers.

Here I am putting my weary feet up after we got it all finished!

And what do you know? A church group was meeting in the foyer and a group of girls were giving massages! Well, who could pass that up after a week of hard slog, loads of walking, talking and creating!? Here are Mandy and Di, unwinding!!

After packing up and massages were over, we all headed back to our hotel for an impromptu meal of Salads, cheese and dips, chips and whatever else we could find in our room.
We all sat around the table and did a show and tell of what we had made over the weekend.

It was such a great way to end the retreat.

We all worked in eack others journals, practised techniques, chatted, laughed and had fun.

Art Journey Retreat 2008 - Day 3

It is a cold, blustering wet day here in Perth today. It is so nice to be cocooned in my little shop, surrounded by art and reliving the memories from last week.
I will be the first to admit that there were things that went wrong and definite improvements to be made, but overall, it was a wonderful weekend, filled with laughter and inspiration and the company of some truly wonderful and inspiring women. That includes tutors and students both!
The amount of talent we have here in Australia is comparable to the worlds best and I hope we, as Australians can embrace these artists.

Now, back to the Art Retreat! Here are a few backgrounds I created during Mistys class. I was fascinated with how Misty created her backgrounds and thoroughly enjoyed smooshing paint around. I also loved the effect of the Adirondack re-inkers. I had a play yesterday, so fun!

Saturday Morning we awoke to a gray overcast sky and a crisp chill to the air. The trees out front of the hotel had been stripped of their leaves, branches left bare to the Melbourne cold.

The range of Autumn hues coating the ground was beautiful and soothing, a lovely way to energise for a busy, creative day ahead.

Todays class was with the beautiful, talented Traci Bautista. This was such a full on class and because of my other obligations I was not fully able to participate in the class. But, I did come away equipped with plenty of knowledge and inspiration to continue my work at home. I also feel I will be able to appreciate Tracis book and DVD so much more now.

This was a very fast paced class, we had alot to do in such a short space of time. The class began with learning Tracis backgrounds, doodling etc.. I was blown away with how quickly Traci works and how beautifullt the end products turned out. It was very liberating, a freeing of creative energy. Great work for a cold day as the fast pace keeps you nice and warm!
Once we had created a huge stack of background papers on different surfaces, Traci taught us how to compile them all in to journal signatures and then stitch the signatures and create a gorgeous ribbon binding.

Below is Shirley Howard all the way from Dowerin in West Australia. Shirley was such a pleasure to have at the retreat. Always calm, and ready to be inspired! Such a beautiful gentle soul.

These are some of Tracis pieces on display. I love Tracis use of colour, so bright and vibrant and the fact that she uses commonly found items to create her patterns on her papers. I loved seeing how she used the different mediums such as Acrylic paint, inks, etc...

Here is Kirsty binding her journal. What a gorgeous girl, so happy and bubbly.

And Debbi Baker, another one all the way from W.A. Debbi is an extremely talented lady and is ready to give anything a go. You can tell from Debbis finished pieces that she has a real passion from her work, which is of such a high standard. She is also a beautiful person, always kind and positive with a nice word for everyone.

And the gorgeous Jo Wholohan, check out that beautiful smile. The only time I didn't see Jo smiling was hen she was concentrating on her work. Another Aussie talent that you need to keep an eye on!

Traci and Mandy. I loved Tracis style (dress and art), her enthusiasm, and lovely calming voice.

And a collection of the days work. I know many of us were going to keep working on these when we got home. If anyone has posted a finished one on their blog let me know!

That evening, a group of us went to Dantes restaurant in Fitzroy for dinner. The food was delicious, the restaurant full of interesting art work and the company spectacular. I had a great evening. It was so nice to chat with everyone, away from the classroom/shop atmosphere. These ladies are all so interesting and fun!

And a carousel horse suspended above the counter. There were so many vintage collections, sculpture and art in this place. I wish I had taken more pictures. Even the toilet (restroom!!) had art work in it. You can imagine what we were like, stopping to stare at every piece!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Unfortunately Nina was still fighting off a chest cold, but it was lovely to have a good chat and laugh with Misty and Traci. I was fascinated to learn more about Tracis workshop in Bali and all about ArtFest. I really need to go to ArtFest next year, Really, really need to go. It sounds like so much fun. My hat certainly goes off to tracy and Teesha Moore. What a mammoth event! 600 ladies plus tutors! I can't fathom how they do it, and they do it so well.

Well, I am off to practise some faces that I prepared earlier. Will post all about Sunday and Ninas class tomorrow or Sunday.

Art Journey Retreat 2008 - Day 1 and 2

Finally home and straight back in to work. So much to process, think about, change and do. And start planning for 2009!!??
Naturally, when you are running an event like this, you learn more with each one, and this being only our second large retreat, we learnt SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much. There are so many things we will do differently next time, and many things will stay the same. Itis a huge learning curve for us and I do admit, there were moments when I seriously considered this being our last retreat.
But we received lots of lovely comments, praise and constructive criticism, that we will do it all over again next year.

Day One was a wildlt chaotic affair, with getting confused on the Melbourne train system (never did figure that out!!), setting up stock, doing registrations and having two classes. The classes run by Ro and Jacky went very well and all the girls who joined in had a wonderful time, were full of enthusiasm and creative energy.

At the end of the day we had to move all the stock in to one of the work rooms so it would be secure for the remainder of the weekend. We were so incredibly lucky to have the huge help of Corinne Davis, Mandy Woodham and Di Thomas. These three girls were our life savers, our sanity and our saving grace. Thankyou so much to all of you from the bottom of my heart.

Day 2

This day I did Misty Mawns class and all I can say is WOW!!!! I had so much fun, I did not want to pack up at the end. I really could have kept playing all night long. Mistys techniques are fantastic and though I had trouble with the faces, I plan on practising lots and lots. It would be very easy to do a week long project with Mistys as you could easily spend a day just playing with backgrounds with out doing any of the other things.

I had such a great time in this class and came away so inspired. I learnt more techniques in this one day than in a year of reading magazines. Nothing quite compares to learning from the creator. I found Misty to be a lovely teacher, very hands on, going through techniques step by step, and then going over them again. There was alot of ooohs and aaahs at the demo table and cameras going off like a press conference! All the students seem to be very impressed and some awesome work was produced that day. I am very happy with what I got done, but really need time to play in the comfort of my own studio with all my pwn products within easy reach. Hopefully get to play today and tomorrow!

In Melbourne at last

After a lovely flight, we arrived in Melbourne to a beautiful Autumn day. We spent the late afternoon and early evening getting to know the Swinburne Tafe area and the Melbourne train system. We are all absolutely exhausted now, so off to have a cuppa and a chat with the lovely Corinne who arrived a couple of hours ago.

Nina Bagley Workshop Photos

Okay, on to what you have all been waiting for, photos from Ninas Book of Trees Workshop. Let me tell you, Ninas book is so awesome, seeing it in the flesh is a real experience!

Anyway, in this beautiful little cottage, a wonderful group of ladies gathered to create, bond, laugh and cry. Works of art were formed daily, friendships were forged and bonds were strengthened. It was so wonderful to see Nina again (even if she did not recognise me until I was right in front of her!!!!). What a pleasure it was to hear that wonderful accent again.

Very, verrrry long post!

Okay, today was the day I headed off to meet Mum, Nina and all the girls in Dwellingup, which is about an hour and a half drive from Perth. Turning on to the road to Dwellingup I was in awe of all this natural beauty around me. After a tough week, it was exactly what I needed and I could feel myself relaxing. The roads were winding with no traffic and surrounded on both sides by towering trees as far as they eye could see. Just magical. And as I crested the hill just before the township of Dwellingup, I was greeted in the ethereal beauty of a quaint country town, wreathed in early morning mist.

The road to Banksia Springs was a narrow, barely there, tar sealed road. The aroma permeating from the surrounding forests was so amazing, it was invigorating. I whirred down the window, turned off the stereo and just absorbed all the peace and tranquility.

Once arrivingI took a quick tour of the Banksia Springs, and that is what I will focus this post on. I will post again tomorrow of all the girls and their amazing work.

This has to a real quick post because I have to leave to pick kids up from school really soon!

I have just spoken to Mum and all the ladies in Dwellingup are having a fantastic time. Nina just loves Dwellingup. I thought she might as it is so quiet and peaceful there.
Apparently, there is alot of talk on the gorgeous journal that Misty made for Nina, I can't wait to see it tomorrow and with Ninas permission might try and get a photo for the blog.

Total organised CHAOS!

I don't know whether to breathe a sigh of relief or go in to panic mode??! Sometimes I question why I do these things to myself, but I know that when we get to Melbourne and start meeting all the wonderful people attending the retreat, and all the classes get underway, thatI will feel very happy with what we have accomplished.

Okay, yesterday the girls started arriving for Ninas class in Dwellingup. Some girls drove straight there but I did have the pleasure of meeting up with Mandy W again, and meeting Karen and Denise. What beautiful ladies they all are! You can see the three of them below, rummaging through the suitcase of ribbon and aged fabrics.

They had a wonderful time exploring the shop and buying lots of goodies to play with during Ninas class!

And this is the glorious view that they will be enjoying right now! The weather is just glorious here right now. T-Shirt during the day sort of weather but nice cool nights and crisp, fresh mornings. Apparently Nina started to feel the effects of jetlag yesterday, so hopefully they got a good nights sleep.

I have decided to drive down on Friday and spend the day with all the girls. Unfortunately I had to stay behind and pack up all the stock ready to be picked up by the courier today. Also, my husband is away again this week for work, so I could not get away for the week. But, I am enjoying the peace that is here right now!!! And this is what I can look forward to seeing on Friday!

As I mentioned earlier, I had to get all the stock packed to have freighted over to Melbourne, all 23 boxes of it! Whilst getting ready to pack this box, I heard some scratching and saw this little fellow in the bottom! Isn't he gorgeous! After getting him to pose for this shot, I set him free in the pack garden. I am so glad I saw him before I piled all our magazines in to the box, he would have been a rather flat chap!

With a few more here that were way to heavy to get up on the table! Now, I can relax and wait for the freight company to come and pick them up to go on tonights truck to Melbourne! Look out, here we come!

I am getting a little frustrated that I have not been able to do anything creative lately, we have been so caught up in the organisation of the retreat. Can you believe that we are going to be meeting up with Misty and Traci and Nina in just a few days! How awesome is that?????
I am starting to get excited now...

Art Journey Retreat 2008 Update

And the countdown is on.....

As of today, it is only three weeks, or 21 days until Nina begins her Dwellingup Retreat and 31 days until Melbourne!!
Are you excited yet??????

Just a little update to keep you all in the loop and advise you of a few things.
Firstly...
REGISTRATION
Registrations will take place in the foyer of the Swinburne Conference Centre on Thursday May 15th May from 12noon until 4pm. At registration you will receive your class map to advise you to where each class is to be held.
If you are attending a Thursday workshop, we will take your registrations from 9:30am in the foyer.
If you are unable to make the Thursday registration, could you please advise us by email so we can organise a Friday registration prior to your first workshop.
If you are only attending 1 or 2 days of workshops, your registration will be taken from 8:30am on the morning of your first workshop.
For those who have ordered kits, these will be available at registration.

CLASS TIMES
Friday, Saturday and Sundays workshops will run from 9am to 4:30pm, with the leniency of running over to 5pm if needed.
Lunch will be 12:30 - 1:30.

SATURDAY EVENING ENTERTAINMENT
We are pleased to announce that on Saturday 17th May we have organised to dine at Dantes Restaurant in Fitzroy. The cost is $38 per person and is payable to the restaurant on the evening. Please visit here to obtain more information and view the menu.

CLASS KITS
Class kits are online and Ninas will be completed tomorrow (or this evening if all goes to plan). If you require certain items from the kits, please contact us and we will let you know prices etc... These can be delivered to you at the retreat to avoid postage costs. We have been receiving alot of orders in the past couple of weeks, so please bear with us as we get them all packed and posted out to those who have requested them.

SHOPPING
We will be setting up a trade area so you may shop to your hearts content. Exhibitors include Artistic Journey, Ro Bruhn and all our US tutors. I am sure there will be something available to suit everyone there! I know I am really looking forward to what the other exhibitors will have to offer.
At Artistic Journey we have been busy sourcing some amazing things for all of you and we are so excited about what we have put together! There is vintage and metals and paint and papers and stamps and books and magazines and the list goes on... Many items will be offered exclusively to retreat delegates and will not go online or in our shop until after the retreat.

ART JOURNEY RETREAT 2009
Yes, I realise that we haven't had our 2008 retreat yet, but we are already setting the wheels in motion for 2009. Once again this will be held somewhere On the East of Australia, possibly Sydney. We are approaching some wonderful tutors who will bring a wide range of artistic talent and techniques. This will also be some time May - July 2009. Sorry I have to be so vague but don't want to say too much until we have firm commitments. Stay tuned....

Tuesday Art Play

A few weeks ago I got this book and though I have looked through it many times, I haven't tried anything from it... until today! My kids had a pupil free day from school, so I thought I would make the most of the day at home and have some art play!

I started by trying some of the step-by-step techniques from the book. This looks pretty yuck with the brown, but I had a colour scheme in mind, so I stuck with it. It was only experimenting anyway, so it didn't really matter if the colours were wrong.
I then added a coat of medium magenta, hmm... still not sure about the colours?
With a few white paint spatters...
Then a few orange spatters (cause I reached for the wrong paint! Should have been brown). It's grown on me since I made it and I am quite happy with it. It has a time worn look.

The next technique was layering papers....
Then painting over the top. Was happy with the colours in this one.
The last technique I tried was using modern photography. I decided to use an image from a magazine...
Painted over the collaged papers, using titan buff, a little burnt umber and a wash of titanium white.
This is the finished piece. I have added some more paint (jenkins green mixed with white) and a few extra elements and a charcoal outline. Quite happy with this one too. It was good just to try the techniques without worrying about the finished piece too much. Now I am feeling happier to try out a journal!

Just some things I love

Thought, that since I was feeling so good I would share a few things that I am loving right now!

This little number is something we(Mum and I) used to make many moons ago. This is the last one I have and she hangs on my pin up board above this here computer, like my little guardian angel. he is surrounded by some of my favourite bits and pieces.
This here is the sign that is on my studio door, courtesy of my sweet 8 year old, Kaitlin. Its just a shame that they do not heed these words, but I guess the thought was there??!

My 2 youngest, playing nicely together and what makes this even better, is that they have cleaned it all up... without being asked... not once!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!!!
MY STUDIO! I could stay here forever if there was a fridge and television. Surrounded by all my yummy favourite things, I am one lucky girl!

My gorgeous man made this picture frame, and yes, it is real pressed tin or ceiling tin some call it.
Love this window frame, that previously mentioned gorgeous man picked up for me. I have a larger one in the shop with 9 openings that I have filled with art work. Will get around to this one day too!

A Retreat to remember

BOOK OF TREES MAY 5 - 11 2008 PERTH WEST AUSTRALIA

In just a few weeks time (May 5 - 11) we are very, very fortunate to be spending a week in Dwellingup with the gorgeous NINA BAGLEY. Nina has very kindly agreed to teach us this amazing book, 'The Book Of Trees' which has never been taught before! How lucky are we?????
Above is a sample of the book and we do have a couple of places still available. If you are considering doing this, I urge you to take the leap. Nina is an enigmatic, kind and generous teacher and her work is so uniquely Nina, full of nature and wire twisting and vintage yummy bits! The cost includes accomadation at the lovely Banksia Springs, all meals and of course Ninas workshop. Evenings will be spent relaxing, playing with products, chatting, laughing and enjoying company of kindred spirits. One day will be spent exploring the wonders of the region which is so beautiful in May.

All these photos were taken by Jacky on a recent stay at Banksia Springs, as you can see it is such a tranquil and beautiful place. In my humble opinion, this is the perfect setting for Nina to teach her wonderful book, surrounded by trees and natures bounty.

Warning... long post ahead

Firstly I would like to say a big heartfelt Thanks to all you wonderful readers who left comments, sent emails and even phoned to offer wonderful words of support and encouragement. I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we are trudging our way towards that light. Each step is taking us forwards. I am so grateful to all of you and to my wonderful Mum, who puts up with my snippy moods, my sadness and my anger. Thankyou Mum, I love you so much!

Okay, now on to the week that has just passed, and it truly has been a busy one. We have been ordering all the supplies needed for the retreat, plus some fantastic goodies for the shop! Mum and I have also started setting up our Etsy stores where we will sell some of our artwork, some of our collections and lots more. I will let you know as soon as this is up and running! Very exciting, just wish there was more time to get stuck in to it. But, we have a retreat to plan! More on that next post!Jen Wordens Challenge.
I had planned to complete a journal that is a UFO for this weeks challenge. But I kept forgetting to take it in to the shop with me! Instead I decided to finish this Pez Totem that I had started in Michael De Mengs class at our Art Retreat in March last year. The one above is the Pez and below is another UFO that I started over a month ago. This is also inspired by Michaels work and is an Anatomy Man. Mum is doing the paint treatment on the box that he will reside in.

Below is our little Puppy Paige, this is the before shot! Before we took her in to get clipped on Thursday...

Its hard to believe that the picture below is of the same dog, 12 hours after the above photo was taken! I must say I prefer her with the long coat, but the heat here is too much for her and her undercoat is very soft and silky. I'm just looking forward to it growing back!

My friend Nic, owner of Twiddlybitz has just bought out her new acrylic range and I am very lucky to have some to do up as samples. Below is the acrylic shrine and I am going to start working on this today.

Then there is an acrylic journal and the price is just awesome! The journal is under $20 and has 5 pages with rounded corners and drilled holes for binding. The last acrylic album I saw was about $60 which was what has put me off buying one. Think I might try to get this done tomorrow or Monday.

This was is almost finished, just need title and journaling. I enjoyed the freestyle form on this one.

Heres my little Maddie again, this photo was taken a few years ago, but I just love it. She looks so cute, but very cheeky and that is my Madison to a 'T'.

This one came together really quickly, the paper is so lovely it really didn't need any more added to it. I just cut around some of the paper, mounted the corner of the photo under it and then journaled directly on the photo. Quick and easy, just the way I like it!

Another one of Courtney at the beach. Also very simple, with the focus on the photo and the journaling. Minimal embellishments on this one.

This is a series of photos I took to showcase a day in our lives. Was good fun doing this and nice to do a layout with more than one photo, which I tend to do more often than not.

Enough is a enough!

Well, I guess this really has been building for over two years now, but I am at that point where 'enough really is enough'!
I am exhausted, emotionally and physically. I try to immerse myself in my art play as a distraction, but events over the past few weeks have tipped me over the edge.
I do try to keep my blog positive and upbeat, but I guess I have decided that those who read this may be able to offer words of advice or at least be a little understanding that I do have pressures in my personal life. I suppose I am asking for a little patience as I attempt to sort through this all.
I have a 15 year old daughter.
I try to understand that she is going through emotional turmoil too, but sometimes it is hard.
I am literally at breaking point and have to try and consider the needs of ALL my children, my marriage, my relationship with others, my business, the retreat...
I am almost in tears I as I write this.
I feel a heaviness in my chest, the emotional drain a physical thing.
I am tired.
I do understand that I have an obligation to all of you. I am trying my very best to meet the demands of all my delegates at the retreat. If I have not answered your emails of late, I most sincerely apologise and I am working hard on getting this done.
If I have made a demand from anyone, consciously or unconsciously, I am sorry.
If I have depressed you with this post, I truly, truly apologise. I do not mean to offend or upset anyone.
I think it is time to sign off and go outside and within with my thoughts.
Later, I will post on a happier note.

Paper casting - work in progress

Have been playing around with different paint techniques with my paper castings (see previous post). This one below, I am making into a journal cover. I have applied a coat of Golden crackle paste all around the outside of the paper casting, which was glued to the journal cover with Gel Medium. Just waiting for the paste to dry and I will extend the paint from the casting.

This one has a coat of Irrid. Bronze. It was watered down quite heavily and I found that watering it down didn't distort the image and was actually easier to work with. It seeped into the creases and grooves and I didn't need to work it in with the brush so much.

This again is the watered down Irrid. Bronze. Left this one patchy, not sure if I want to leave it like that or add another colour??

This has a coat of Quin NA Gold with a brushing of Irrid. Bronze over the top.

This one I started out by dry brushing the HB Burnt Umber. I found it was a little too sticky for the TP casting and started to lift the layers. I then applied a watered down mix of NA Gold and Black to fill in the white patches. Once dry I applied a little Treasure gold to pick up the detailing. I then tore around the image to roughen up the look.

I actually quite like the subtlety of this piece, even more so now that I see it on here! I think I will give all the finished pieces a couple of coats of Gel Medium or GAC to add a little strength, especially the one on the book cover.

Okay, my back is aching from sitting at this computer and I have retreat kits to load on to the online shop
